i've been using this method for almost 2 weeks now & my kid is OUT in less than 20 minutes, on average. i bought a lavender-filled eye pillow for about $5, intending to use it for my yoga practice. one night, after a crazy evening of chasing my boy around & trying to lure him to bed, i broke out the eye pillow (he already enjoyed sniffing it) & layed down in nursing position. as an experiment, i placed the eye pillow lengthwise under my breast so that his face & my breast were cushioned by it. this put it in direct sniffing range for him & he immediately began to calm down. i thought the first night was a fluke, "he was probably just overtired", but i tried it again. and again... and again! every. single. time. he was out like a light before midnight! finally! hallelujah - i have my evenings back!
oh the joys of aromatherapy.

Re: trouble getting the wee one to sleep?
Thu, February 21, 2008 - 6:38 AMI am so going to try this. My kid is running my ragged these days! I keep wondering how he could possibly get as little sleep as he seems to and still have so much energy! -

Re: trouble getting the wee one to sleep?
Thu, February 21, 2008 - 8:55 AMwhen we travel--and we just took a long train trip--i have a lavender spray i make with water, a little witch hazel, and lavender essential to spray in hotel rooms and on sheets and bedding or seats... that could work for those of us with drippy boobs.

Re: trouble getting the wee one to sleep?
Sat, February 23, 2008 - 6:27 PMi just learned this trick in another thread.....steep lavender in olive or sunflower oil for a couple of weeks, strain, and use it on the bottom of the feet before bed.....as a lotion after baths... -

Re: trouble getting the wee one to sleep?
Sat, February 23, 2008 - 8:24 PMuse caution when applying lavender topically to a boy, however. something about lavender messes with their hormones & causes excess estrogen in male babies. i use lavender-anything in extremely small portions, like in every third bath. i like the aromatherapy, but the cautionary tales i heard about the estrogen freaked me out! -

Re: trouble getting the wee one to sleep?
Sun, February 24, 2008 - 10:52 AMI've read the same thing. I can't remember where but it was a fairly recent study. I stopped putting lavender oil on our son for the same reason.

Re: trouble getting the wee one to sleep?
Mon, February 25, 2008 - 2:57 PMGood to know!
Thanks for the eye pillow suggestion. Boy, I am glad I am not the only one up all night. I am new at this, as Ronan is 8 weeks old.
We are doing pretty well with nursing lying down, but he spits up a lot and makes grunting sounds and gutteral sounds for hours...
How do you manage to feed all night in bed without burping/spitting up issues when babies are still newborns?
Thanks,
Jade Moon -

Thu, March 27, 2008 - 10:01 PMI was going to say...mamas (idee and why-u-n-I) I knew you knew better than that.
I think it was in the PPM tribe we talked about this. Maybe loving hands.
I used to use the lavender baby magic on jacob as a liitle baby and he HATED it. I took the hint after trying 3x. -

Re: trouble getting the wee one to sleep?
Sat, March 29, 2008 - 11:20 AMOn the side note of boys and estrogen- I just read Boys Adrift and in it the author talks about the estrogen in meat, mainstream dairy, plastic containers and even the water (from birth control pills). It gave me the willies.
