just bought the new synergy model, and then two days after heard bjorn carriers put too much stress on baby's crotch, affecting spine and posing lifetime health problems. unfortunately i tossed out receipt! i tried this out with bebe facing me, tummy to tummy. seemed weight was distributed more on his bottom, not localized just to crotch area. still i'm apprehensive about using bjorn.
anyone carried your baby in bjorn? i'm curious to hear your thoughts / experience. thanks!

Sun, March 15, 2009 - 2:49 PMUGH...the Bjorn is awful. I hated mine. IT not only stressed the crotch area on baby, but it annihilated my back. Worst backaches ever.
I now have the ergo and a few wraps. LOVE them. I recommend returning yours and investing in a wrap or one of Idee's wraps. She makes BEAUTIFUL carriers.

Re: bjorn baby carrier
Sun, March 15, 2009 - 5:51 PMi have heard that the bjorn is a torture device. and i had one that is. mu friend gave me a new one that has back soppurt so it was comfy as a corset. as the pressure held everything in. good thing. however i feel bjorns are better for boobless people. my husband loves the bjorn. as for the stress on the crotch i dont know aboiut that as we dont use it 24/7. i use the onbuhimo from here: www.sew-at-home-mama.com/
she costum made me a gothey one. -

Mon, March 16, 2009 - 6:34 AMi'm an ergo momma ... we started at 7 months and i continue to wear our 30+ pound/2.5 year old daughter for short walks.
if you don't have your receipt, a place like babies r us will accept returns without a receipt for store credit ... or put that sucker on craigslist. -

Re: bjorn baby carrier
Mon, March 16, 2009 - 1:43 PMthanks for all your replies. my husband is boobless... and the bjorn still can't fit him! thought about selling it, but feel like it's such a bad product for baby. tried wearing it around with extra support of arms, but that's redundant and more straining on back.
hmm, wondering if i should donate it to fashion school or something to remix it......
i appreciate the ergo more now. really a good carrier. -

Re: bjorn baby carrier
Mon, March 16, 2009 - 10:08 PMnever used the bjorn...not right for us and the word on the street wasn't favorable... weight distribution is no joke
in our house papa uses ergo and mama uses moby wraps, ring sling, a couple of fitted slings... we still use our slings and wraps and carriers at 15+ months when she gets tired of walking...LOL

Re: bjorn baby carrier
Fri, March 20, 2009 - 4:47 AMi'm wondering how the new synergy model differs from previous ones ( like "active" "city") in terms of baby comfort and safety. did bjorn make modifications to carrier in response to criticisms of design?
when i wore the synergy, we walked a couple of miles, bebe fell asleep seemed comfortable, though my back hurt. facing me, he did seem to have ample support in hips/butt, and possibly spine. the front piece of synergy is thin and flexible, somewhat body conforming. is this different from other bjorn models? from appearance it looks like other models are molded.
synergy model is convenient, easy on and off, very lightweight, and sexy design (if you're into porsches, heh). however in spite of its user friendly strap adjustment and buckle system, its not comfortable to wear even before bebe is in. straps are binding right over breasts (ouch my nipples are sore as they are). tried to displace them but doesn't work. ergo takes weight on hips; bjorn doesn't.
thanks for responses and links. i'll test drive the synergy again. still uncertain about it as a carrier tummy-to-tummy. for carrying baby facing out however, it looks crotch-stressing.
my friend who is a birth professional and fierce baby advocate told me that in terms of psychological/emotional health, baby facing out in a carrier or stroller is not good. just finished reading a waldorf educator's book which mentioned same thing. on occasion my husband would take bebe out forward facing in moby wrap, which bebe enjoyed, i think it can make him feel more grown up.

Re: bjorn baby carrier
Fri, March 20, 2009 - 8:35 AMwell, some babies really do benefit from facing the caregiver all the time. But its really up to the baby.Other babies, esp. older ones, really like to look out at the world and see whats going on. They squirm around to try to see when theyre facing you. -

Re: bjorn baby carrier
Fri, March 20, 2009 - 9:10 AMbefore we switched to the ergo at around 7 months, i carried abigail cross-legged in a hotsling ... she was 3-7 months .. she loved looking out. it really depends on the baby, and what momma is comfortable with doing.

tottally just an opinion.... but i think these ideas can put alot of burden on aware parents. we try so hard to do right and end up stressing ourselves out trying to make everything perfect.
i still do front carry tummy to tummy from time to time. my japanese carrier is also for backpack style carry. honestly though i tend to push her in an umbrella stroller. i spend sooo much time with her sometimes i need an hour of not looking at her... its horrible......
but she gets to wave at puppies. hehe. i dont think therer are out facing strollers or carriers for really young babies. i could be tottally wrong though.

Re: bjorn baby carrier
Sat, March 28, 2009 - 12:44 PMthanks, moms, for your replies. you're right, perfectionism+parenting can cause a lot of suffering. is there any way for me to convert to another astrological sign? (i'm virgo)
i took the bjorn synergy carrier out for another long spin. here's my conclusion:
this model isn't bad for tummy to tummy carriage. not as comfortable as ergo, but not any less comfortable than a mei tai. because it's streamlined, it's good for multitasking use-- i have more mobility of arms, even when bebe is asleep. bebe will probably outgrow the synergy soon because the support hammock isn't as wide as ergo or mei tai. right now it covers his seat perfectly. the front piece is flexible and conforming, which i think gives carrier better support than older models. the shoulder straps don't accommodate a range of body types unfortunately-- still partially binding the breasts. synergy is very easy on and off; bebe so far has never gotten fussy going in or out. lastly, bebe is comfy in it and falls asleep quickly.
so i'm keeping it until he outgrows it, which may be in another month! though the manual states it holds heavier babes, support will be too narrow. i like synergy model for short use with bebe facing me. it's not a bad carrier for tummy to tummy, but it's pricey for something used for two months at most.
