What I do with our oldest (he'll be 3 in march) is put him to bed at about 8:30 and read him books. Then we kiss and hug, say goodnight, turn out the light, then we cuddle till he goes to sleep (usually about 30 min total) then I just get up and go do whatever. It's a great way to get one on one time now that we have another baby. Sometimes it takes longer for him to fall asleep which is kind of fustrating at times, but I know he's probably not going to want me to cuddle him to sleep when he is 13 so I'm going to enjoy it now lol.

Well, he still has his AM nap, just skips the PM. And then he falls asleep happily- he normally jumps on the bed for a long time before finally falling asleep. But it won't happen everyday- he slept a lot in the car today and is bounching off the furniture as we speak. Bedtime will be at least 10:15 or so. But that is fine- I got a few mommy hours last night, and it was a first in 16 months- so I was glad for any time! If it could happen just a night or two a week, I'd be more than happy!

for us, skipping naps makes bedtime a horror. Jake is too tired and restless and get SUPER pissed. then we end up spending (sometimes) hours getting him calmed down.

So I think I have got it figured out.... skip his afternoon nap! He would prefer to skip it most days anyway, and then he is more tired at night. He was a bit grumpy at dinner, and then went happily to bed at 7:30. I laid with him for 10 minutes instead of the usual 30 plus minutes and he was completely out. Then I spent 3 glorious hours doing stuff I have been eager to do in the garage, instead of going to sleep early. Yeah!

It took a little practice but we worked on reading stories followed by tooth brushing and then back rubbing. I would talk to him and tell him everything that was going to happen well before it did so that he could get the routine solidly set in his mind. Like while we were reading I would say OK this book will be the last and then we will go brush teeth and then mommy will rub your back in bed. He wanted me to lie down always in the beginning but eventually he got that I was right next to him even if I wasn't going to lie down.

Thanks ladies! I have just been going to bed at 8 or rocking him to sleep in the living room and then taking him to bed. I think it'll go that way for awhile. I was hoping to score an extra hour at night for myself, but maybe in the future that will happen! :)

Hello! Our son is 16 months, and we all share the bed. We are definitely not ready to move our son into his own bed. However, he has started to nap less and want to go to bed earlier.

The problem is that he wants us to be in bed in order for him to fall asleep, but we don't want to be in bed at 8. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get him to go to sleep on his own? This would also make nap time easier, as I might not have to lay down with him for so long.

So far, I have been rocking him to sleep in the living room and then laying him in bed. I think this may be the best way, but it would still be nice for him to be able to fall asleep on his own sometimes!

Thanks for any advice!!
