My son's foreskin has gotten a bit irritated and red before. If it's actually pus coming out rather than a bit of curdy, white debris (which can look like pus) then it's infected. I'd put some non-irritating topical ointment on it, like lanolin and if it really looks infected then maybe some antibiotic first like bactroban, then a barrier cream like lanolin.

A UTI wouldn't have pus come out, the infection's so far up in the bladder that it doesn't do that, and boys rarely get uti's... but if the foreskin is infected or irritated then it'll produce pus.

I'd also cut out any irritant like bubble baths or harsh soap that come in contact with his penis. I wound up taking my son to the doc and got a prescription for antibiotics but i never needed to fill it coz it started getting better that day with lanolin alone (it was just red from irritation rather than bacterial infection).

you can also try bathing nim in a tub with a strong infusion of mallow root and/or comfrey root, and/or adding baking soda to the water (it;s an amphoteric that functions as a weak acid as wella s a weak base as needed, and often soothes irritated skin.

I only have a girl,so not much direct excperience, but I;ve heard enough good results from these treatments to recommend.

also, some antiseptic herbs in the water..thyme, echnacrea root, etc can help.

try a combination of powdered slippery elm bark and goldenseal or oregon grape root as a diazper powder at every change...I've heard this one is helpful too.

I only have a girl but we use aloe for EVERYTHING. Aloe is great at helping clear up rashes, infections, irritated skin, whatnot.

have you allowed his foreskin to retract naturally? is it possible that it was forcibly retracted, either by accident or by his own doing? asking him if it hurts & when it began hurting will give you a clearer idea of what you're facing. everyone's advice on herbal soaks & topical solutions sound great. my boy's foreskin is still very much attached, as he's only 21 months old, but it sometimes looks a little red & inflamed, so i will take this advice too.

can i add i'd be a little careful about using comfrey in a bath. It's an amazing healing herb for deep tissue injuries but it's also a bit irritating to the skin, so for people with sensitive skin it's a bad idea.
        • comfrey, was lil boy...

          Mon, August 4, 2008 - 10:21 AM
comfrey irritating to the skin? that i never heard or experienced, unless yo are talking about the raw hairy plant, which can be a little itchy...comfrey is one of the most potent skin soothers I;ve known...nothing like comfrey or comfrey-calendula salve for diaper rash and most any skin botheration I know!!!

also I was thinking about this earlier today...has anyone ever used eyebright infusion for an irritated foreskin? it's such a graeat healer for conjunctivitis (pinkeye) that it seems to me it should be great for another moist, semi-open-to-the-outside world part of the body...thought I might ask about this on the intactivists list...

judith, would you speak more about eyebright, maybe in another thread? my girl has had two bouts of conjunctivitis in her two years ...

sure, i jsut startted another thread. babies sometimes get goopy-eyed because their ducts get plugged. and then they discover putting their hands on all kinds of stuffa dn rubbing their eyes...getting a toddler to hold still for a compress might be a little tricky though...just drops on clean cotton balls might be the best you cn do depending on how docile your child is...

            Hi Judith-
yes, i was talking about the raw plant. It grows like crazy around here so whenever i've used the leaves medicinally, well- if you've got sensitive skin it will get irritated. The roots have never caused me a problem. But of course i don't often pull up and destroy the plant to get to the roots.

Eyebright is good for conjunctivitis and so is breastmilk!

the root is the strongest part for many medicinal purposes. when fresh, it;s very mucilaginous and soothing. i;d say don;t feel guilty about "destroying the plant"...a tiny piece of comfrey root in the soil will grow back into a huge comfrey plant..g.etting rid of it can be a problem! but it;s aq wonderful healing plant though i'm cautious about any internal use.

you can always dry the leaves to use for later, and teh hairy-itchy stuff goes away...

"Eyebright is good for conjunctivitis and so is breastmilk!"

i'm definitely trying eyebright the next time abigail has conjunctivitis ... but sadly, breastmilk did not "work" for us the first time around. it was soothing and familiar, but it didn't help to clear up the goo.

(is breastmilk supposed to do anything more than soothe?)

Yup- breastmilk has a high concentration of IgA, which is an immunoglobulin that your body produces to fight infections specifically in the GI tract and mucus membranes, so normally it's great for eye infections.

With all due respect for the alternative treatments, I'd make an appointment for the MD in a case like this.
Poor lil' guy. I hope he feels better soon.

Trouble is, a shocking number of MDs, including pediatricians, are still horribly, dangerously uninformed about caring for intact boys.
So many friends have gotten terrible advice that have made things worse.

Mothering.com has a terrific forum on the whole subject, from intactivist ideas to caring for intact boys to "restoring" lost foreskins.
(Oddly, we're not allowed to discuss "religious" mutilations... )

I can vouch for mis-informed MD's... I just had a recent experience with one...
And it's hard as your son is *right there* very vulnerable, and very impressionable...

If things at home don't work, go to the MD... but ask to discuss the matter out of the room,
or at least out of hearing shot of the child...

I almost popped the MD in the nose, or at least I imagined it and it made me feel better... =p
but she tried telling me that my son has *big problems* when I know for a fact that he is just fine...
(his foreskin still has minor adhesions at the tip of his glans... he's only 6, he's fine!)
        • Re: lil boy with penis pus

          Wed, August 6, 2008 - 8:20 AM
excuse me, he has adhesions on the edge of his glans... as long as his
urethra isn't blocked, he is just fine... usually adolescence will take care of it...
          • Re: lil boy with penis pus

            WOW

            thanks all for the replies.

I started giving him collidal silver and washing with soap which maybe i shouldn't do but i have never gone out of my way to wash him under foreskin, "poor hygiene" which i think contributed... collidal silver cleared it immediately, next day

Reading your posts about conjuctivitis...homeopathic pulsatilla is an excellent remedy and so may work for a pussy lingam as well.

              OK

just read the posts from mothering and GOD i didt' know i should never ever retract it. I have not been but when it started to be red i started to and then it began to pus. Advice there to get liquid acidophilus and dip the tip of foreskin in but to NEVER retract foreskin. I think i may have made matters worse temporarily.
  • Re: lil boy with penis pus

In my experience with my son (he's 6.5 now...) he started to retract his foreskin on his own between 4 and 5... no one should ever force it back (tho MD's will unwisely tell you to do so)... full retraction can occur in between the ages of 3-4 to 12-14... rising testosterone levels in puberty usually allow any remaining adhesions to release... again, as long as the urethra is no blocked, there is no problem... these things take time for a reason... the foreskin is helping protect a very delicate organ...

Pus, however, is never natural, no mater how much or how little presents its self... this is a sign of infection and due to the delicate nature of this tissue should be dealt with as soon and as comfortably as possible... my son has had the red and itchy moments, usually due to lack of proper hygiene... a good hot bath usually does the trick... I've never had to become invasive with any cleaning procedures or going to the doc's...

Teaching my young boy how to help keep himself clean turned out to be helpful and important... (this is why we do need to wash our hands!! My boy needs that reminder daily!) He now knows that if his penis is bothering him, it's because it needs to be washed... he usually comes to me if he's concerned, and we've had no major problems yet...

Jessica suggested using lanolin, to help keep the area clean and relieve the tissue... this, I think, will help greatly... the barrier of lanolin would also help prevent adhesions forming as a result of infection, depending of course on whether or not this was due to any forced retraction... If his foreskin retracts on it's own, then it's fine... but if you are ever forcing it, you will know the difference! And your son will let you know!

    Much luck to you Mama...!!

I think what they're calling "a little bit of pus" is probably smegma, a kind of white, curd-like collection of dead skin cells and debris that can accumulate there.

yeah- pus is always infection. but white goop is white goop.

my son is just past two and the amount of pulling (not retracting) he does is almost painful to see, but he's oblivious so he can't be hurting himself but i'm thinking he's doing a good job of loosening the skin.

it was extremely smelly pus but lasted only one day.

so what is the proper way to clean if you are not supposed to retract the foreskin at all?

a good sitz-nath soak in healing water will get enough stuff in there, I think.

I;ve heard so much praise for the baking soda and the tonic herbs in the water I;d give them a try.

if it;s warm outm, maybe let him run naked a bit and "airdry." if I had a seruious owie down there I wouldn;t want it patted or rubbed for a bit.

For regular washing protocol, I just showed my son how to use a washcloth
    and wash around down there...
your son will run up to you some day soon and say "look what I can do!!"
and his foreskin will be retracting... that's when
you just show him to wash while the skin is retracted... that simple...

running around naked is fun for them, and so wash time can be too!!

I;ve heard some HILARIOUS stories about this! several moms told me that when they learned the new :tirck" they couldn;t wait to tell the neighbors.

my friend who had a a girl 17 months older than her little intact brother would arn my daughter when they came to visit...
look out, he;s making an eyeball withj his penis again!"

and my facorite ...I nominated this for the Funniest Post of 2000 on an unassisted childborth pist...is still my friend whose children had been with her when their aunt (my friend;s sister) had a baby at home in the hot tub.

little Jack, or whatever his name was started pulling his skin back after that and saying to mama or whoever would be an audience..."look, it;s having a baby!"

      emergence...gotta love it.

hope he;s feeling better and embarrassing you with these little-boy-shenanigans soon!

ps please report back on what worked in terms of the sitx=bath ideas.

James Green, author of the Male Herbal, recommends all kinds of curative penis soaks in a glass of infused/decoctd tea...but I have a feeling getting a really young child to dangle his willie in a glkass of tea water might be an adventure not to have...though who knows, he might find it all very funny.

are there any GUYS, like his daddy or an older brother or uncle or grandpa, who could help? somehow part of the problem here sweems to me that those of us who DON'T gave penises are not as good at miodeling how to take care of them as someone who DOES have one, intact or not... (okay, I do have this funny image of makle trole model with HIS in a glass coaxing little Jasckie or whoever to do same...)

is there a general age when it starts retracting on its own??

I hear generally around age 4 or so...as with anything else in human development, there are plenty of variations.

as I say, seems many of my friends with intact sons have found that their little guys are delighted with discovering this new "sliding toy!"

            Judith, I love your stories...!
My son was about 4ish when his foreskin started retracting...
and he truly did come up to me one afternoon and say
"Mom!! Look what I can do to my penis!"
Boys seem to be really good at loosening it up with all the
tugging and pulling they do at that stage... :D

In the info I've read, it can happen anywhere starting at about
3ish up to 12/13... it all depends as everyone is different...
and like I mentioned, my son's is still slightly attached at the base
of the glans, this is normal and will correct itself in time... testosterone
has a wonderful way of loosening any "stuck" spots later on...
As long as the Urethra isn't blocked, then your little boy is just fine...

Trust me, he'll figure it out and then you'll wish he didn't know it
could do that so soon... =p

                no worries... things take time...
and if he's been a bit irritated then it's best to just
let things rest... but when he seems to be feeling back to his normal
self see if he can retract it at all... my little brother was about 6 or 7
when he finally retracted... in fact my mom apparently had to ask
him if could, he didn't know so she had him try... she showed him
how to do this, gently of course, and sure enough, lil bro just
hadn't tried but totally could... he did tell my mother however, after
a long sigh, that this had changed his penis forever... :D
